Femi Kuti, thrice unlucky at the Grammy

Afrobeat
musician and scion of Fela Anikulapo music dynasty, Femi Kuti, has for
the third time in a decade lost the prestigious Grammy awards.
The singer who was not at
the 54th annual ceremony on Sunday at the Staples Centre, Los Angeles,
US, had been nominated twice before then. He was first nominated in 2003
and thereafter in 2010.
In the last edition of the
Grammy, Femi was nominated in the Best World Music Album Category
alongside Afrocubism, Tinariwen and Lady Smith Black Mambazo.
While Femi’s Africa for Africa album earned him the nomination, Afrocubism joined the list with an album with same title, Lady Smith’s Songs From A Zulu Farm got the group the nomination and Tinariwen who eventually emerged winner, made the category with the album Tassili.
However, Soul singer Adele stole the show as she won six Grammys, clearing all the category she was nominated.
In the past, Seal Olumide
Adeola Samuel, a Soul and R&B singer, who is of Nigerian and
Brazilian background, won four Grammy awards, including the Brit awards,
among other awards. He has many global hits, especially the famous Kiss From A Rose.
Also, Folasade Adu, known to have Nigerian root, has won both the Brit and Grammy awards.
