AWKA- THE Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has announced the result of the rerun election for Anaocha/Njikoka/Dunukofia federal constituency in Anambra State conducted on Wednesday, saying the candidate of All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, Mrs. Uche Ekwunife polled 29,005 to defeat her opponent, Mr. Dozie Nwankwo of Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN who scored 21,948 votes. Ekwunife is the chairman of the House of Representatives committee on environment.
The Court of Appeal sitting in Enugu had ordered the rerun in 11 wards in the constituency following an appeal by the ACN candidate after the election petition tribunal sitting in Awka had ruled that the rerun should take place in only four wards in the constituency.
National chairman of APGA, Chief Victor Umeh, who reacted on the election said the result was a reconfirmation of the strength of his party in Anambra State.
His words: “It shows that APGA is the popular choice over other parties by the people of Anambra State. It also shows that Ekwunife and APGA won the election conducted in the constituency in April last year despite the pretences of our opponents.
“While I congratulate Hon Uche Ekwunife for this deserved victory, I thank my good people of Anaocha/Njikoka/Dunukofiafederal constituency. I also commend INEC for doing a thorough job that ensured a hitch –free execise.”
